10 Life Hacks Every Girl Should Know

1/12/2025

I’m Vienna Lewis, a current junior at San Ramon Valley High School and concurrently enrolled at Diablo Valley College. I’m a 17 year old girl and a lover of all things matcha, old books, music, and psychology- which I’m pursuing a degree in! Throughout these past three years as a high school student, I’ve learned quite a bit about life, beauty, fashion, and friendships. High school is guaranteed to throw some confusing situations and hard decisions at every young girl- but I’ve noticed some common themes among my experiences at San Ramon. Here, I’ve compiled a list of the ultimate bits of information you should
most definitely know in this significant chapter of your life- whether you’re a graduating eighth grader or a seasoned high school senior. Starting off strong…

  1. Take Every Opportunity- Be Confident In Your Skills!

For every young girl striving for success, it is crucial that all opportunities are taken. As stated by Malcolm Gladwell, the author of Outliers, a book all about the origins of success, “It is those who are successful, in other words, who are most likely to be given the kinds of special opportunities that lead to further success.” In other words, opportunities and luck are a special and rare occurrence- which means you should seize the moment! However, this is easier said than done. Based on my personal experience, fear and embarrassment will often get in the way of taking every opportunity. Over my high school career, I’ve learned that this fear is a barrier to my success- and I’ve learned that opportunities are precious. If you work hard for these opportunities, eradicate this fear of embarrassment or failure, and seize the chance- you may discover that you are capable of more than you possibly could limit yourself to.

  1. Don’t Be Afraid To Express Yourself- Be A Creator, Not Just A Consumer!

In this day and age of social media, with endless streams of content tailored to your interests that sucks up all of your attention, most girls with TikTok or Instagram currently downloaded experience a plethora of online media and art to the point of mental overload. Because of this “endless content crisis,” the newer generation is losing creators- or the people that make this content. The nature of social media leads us to constant comparison with other girls, or influencers with “perfect” lives, producing this media. While exploring this phenomenon firsthand, I’ve realized that the key to self-confidence is being a creator, rather than a consumer. Spending hours scrolling instead of honing in on a hobby could be considered “consumer” behavior. I get it- doom scrolling may seem easier than mastering a craft, creating art, or expressing yourself, but you will find that dedicating yourself to your own form of self-expression rather than obsessing over someone else’s will invite more joy into your life.

  1. Be Sustainable In Your Fashion Choices- Save The Environment And Your Money!

Buying clothes has never been easier for teenagers in the history of the fashion industry. Teens nowadays can find cute, affordable clothes without escaping the comfort of their homes and have clothes shipped to them with just the click of a button. This issue within the fashion industry is called fast fashion. Fast fashion sounds like paradise, but it massively harms the planet and exploits workers. It involves the mass production of clothes made by the most popular clothing brands, which negatively affects the biosphere. Big companies who participate in fast fashion design clothes that follow micro trends within the fashion industry and sell rapidly. Once these trends cease to exist, clothes are quickly discarded and then piled onto the mountains of trash in the ocean. Despite the abhorrent effects of this industry, there is hope amidst the chaos of fast fashion. Some easy ways to avoid contributing to fast fashion include thrifting and buying from sustainable brands, simplifying your wardrobe, donating clothes that you don’t need, and solely buying sustainable, quality clothes that are guaranteed to last a while.

  1. Spend Time On Self-Care Every Week- Light A Candle, Pick Up A Book!

In the hustle and bustle of daily life, it’s easy to forget to take care of yourself. But setting aside time for self-care, even once a week, can make all the difference. Burnout in teenage girls is becoming increasingly common as we juggle school, extracurricular activities, social pressures, and the constant demands of social media. Teen girls often push themselves to meet expectations, neglecting their own well-being in the process. It’s crucial to recognize these signs of burnout early—such as irritability, fatigue, and lack of motivation—and take proactive steps to prioritize self-care, seek support. For high school girls, nurturing your mental, emotional, and physical well-being is essential for maintaining balance. Simple acts, such as taking a bath, doing skincare, creating a cozy space, and picking up a book, can all work wonders. These moments allow you to unwind, reflect, and recharge. Make time for yourself weekly, because you deserve it!

  1. It’s Never Too Early To Start Investing- Build Up A Credit Score, It’ll Pay Off!

Building a good credit score early is one of the smartest financial moves a girl can make. A solid credit score is more than just a number- it reflects your reliability as a borrower and can impact major future decisions, like renting an apartment, getting a car loan, or even securing a job. Starting to build credit in your teens or early twenties gives you a head start, allowing you to take advantage of lower interest rates and better financial opportunities as you grow older. It’s important to start by paying bills on time, using credit responsibly, and avoiding excessive debt. At the same time, investing, even in small amounts, such as a 401k or retirement plan, helps grow wealth over time and teaches girls the value of financial planning. Together, building credit and investing early sets the foundation for a secure financial future.

  1. Invest In Your Education- The Key To Success!

Not only would I suggest investing money-wise- but also in your education! Investing in your education is one of the most powerful decisions you can make for your future. For girls, education opens doors to endless opportunities (as referenced in the first life hack), empowering you to pursue your passions, develop essential skills, and achieve financial independence. Education gives you the knowledge to make informed decisions, aids you in overcoming tough situations, and boosts confidence. It also equips you with the tools to break barriers, fight gender and racial inequality, and become a leader in any field you choose. The more you invest in your education now, the more options you’ll have later in life, because education is an opportunity- and largely only offered in your youth! Remember, education is not just about grades—it’s about investing in your future potential.

  1. Don’t Compare Yourself To Girls On Social Media- Remember, It's A Highlight Reel!
It’s important to remember that what you see online is often considered a "highlight reel"—a carefully curated collection of moments that show only the best, most polished parts of someone’s life. When girls compare themselves to these filtered versions of other girls, it can make you feel inadequate, self-doubting, and pressured to live up to unrealistic standards. Social media doesn't reflect the full picture—it ignores struggles, imperfections, and the behind-the-scenes reality of everyday life. Everyone has their own unique path and timeline, and it’s crucial to focus on your own journey rather than trying to measure up to someone else's. The truth is, real success and happiness come from embracing who you are, accepting your flaws, and celebrating your individuality. Instead of comparing, use social media as a tool for inspiration, not competition. Follow accounts that empower and uplift you, and remember that your worth is not defined by likes, followers, or how you stack up against others. You’re enough just as you are, and your story is uniquely yours—don’t let the curated world of social media make you forget that!

  1. Learn To Say No- Set Boundaries When Needed!

Setting boundaries is an essential skill for girls to protect their time, energy, and well-being. Saying "no" when something doesn’t align with your values, or when you’re stretched too thin, is a powerful act of self-care, as mentioned earlier. Saying “no” can protect your physical body as well- accepting or rejecting physical touch is your decision alone. Boundaries can prevent burnout, reduce stress, and allow you to prioritize your own needs. They also teach others to respect your limits, creating healthier relationships and a stronger image for yourself. Remember, saying "no" doesn’t make you selfish—it’s a sign of self-respect and emotional strength. By setting clear boundaries, you create space for what truly matters in your life.

  1. The People Who You Surround Yourself With Matter- Jim Rohn’s Theory!
Jim Rohn once famously said, "You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with." This concept emphasizes the profound impact that the people around us have on shaping our lives, especially for young girls navigating our social lives. The individuals a girl surrounds herself with influence her mindset, aspirations, and actions. Friends and mentors who are supportive, ambitious, and positive can inspire us to reach higher goals and unlock our potential. On the other hand, spending time with people who lack drive or harbor negativity can hinder progress and foster complacency. If a girl wants to be confident, successful, and resilient, she should seek relationships with individuals who embody those qualities. These five people act as a mirror, reflecting our values, habits, and priorities. By surrounding ourselves with strong role models,we learn to adopt constructive habits, embrace challenges, and build self-worth. Jim Rohn’s theory is a reminder to intentionally choose relationships that elevate and empower. After all, the company we keep isn’t just about companionship—it’s a roadmap for the future.
  1. And Finally- Don’t Worry Too Much About How You Look!
To wrap up our 10 life hacks, I want to remind every girl that her looks aren’t even 5% of her whole self, and should not be stressed too much over. While looks can be a form of self and cultural expression, many girls nowadays must be reminded that looks truly aren’t everything, even though our society may tell us this. Young girls often feel immense pressure to look perfect, but it’s important to remember that true beauty comes from within. Focusing too much on appearance can overshadow the qualities that truly matter--kindness, intelligence, creativity, and confidence. Your worth is not defined by how you look, but by how you treat others and the unique talents you bring to the world. Don’t let society’s unrealistic standards weigh you down. You are enough just as you are--beautiful, capable, and deserving of all good things!
